CHAPTER IV - Refusal of the Call: Mindset and Values Questioning
Refusal of the call is normal and almost universal. Fear, doubt, and limiting beliefs surface the moment the adventure becomes real.
Carol Dweck’s research shows that a growth mindset, defined as the belief that abilities including intelligence and skills can be developed through dedication and hard work, leads to greater resilience and achievement. People with a fixed mindset avoid challenges to protect their ego (Dweck, 2006). (6)
Exercise – Mindset Audit (15 minutes)
- For each of three recent situations where you felt stuck, ask:
- Was I operating from a fixed mindset (“I’m not good at this”)?
- What would a growth mindset response look like (“I’m not good at this yet. What can I learn?”)?
- Write one concrete micro-action you will take this week to practice the growth response.
